Stacy was estatatic! She was giving the first tour of their little rescue as their little Grand Opening where everyone who invested and granted them money got to come in and see. All but one at least. “Sorry is not a game for adults”… Stacy wondered if she would meet this person today or not. She had created an entire talk about the turtles especially just in case one of their investors was also their mystery investor.

“Ok you guys now if you’ll look here,” she pointed to their new ID sign, “you’ll see this is a little different than normal. At the bottom you’ll see each shell design and it tells you which turtles is which, it says their diets and about their habitats, but what is this? A button? And a Hole? Watch ladies and gentlemen, and if you’d like a picture get your cameras ready now.” Stacy turned towards the sign and made sure she was standing towards the right to not block the little port hole. Please let them do well with this like we did in practice. She pushed the button and a very faint ding, almost inaudible rang out, and they waited. The next thing they knew they saw the turtles coming from the left, and one zoomed ahead to gobble up a piece of shrimp that had been released and to look out through the hole. Stacy noticed some camera nosies going off.

She turned and smiled, “Quinn has come to say hello to everyone.” She was beaming at the astonished looks of their faces. This was going so well!

“Now the Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a critically endangered animal. Quinn here was a rescue with another male and neither of them were going to be able to be released out into the wild. They were happy with us even before all the renovations and ended up laying a nest up on a small beach that we had for them. They had laid 14 eggs, all of which that hatched and gave everyone quite a surprise! We have chosen the two smaller ones that you may see hiding in here to keep. We have currently 10 more to rehome at this time. We chose two females and another zoo that wishes to have a database chose two males and we traded them a male to keep inbreeding from happening. Now that Quinn has surprisingly chosen our little beach here to lay her eggs, as she must have never had the chance to do so before, this is the only beach she will lay her eggs. Same as these babies they will always go back to the same beach they hatched from. Luckily for us we now have a small breeding program going on where the remaining hatches will be released when available.

Their ‘hawk’ beaks that they are named for are a great asset for their diets. They can get small animals, and vegetation from in between the nooks and crannies of the reef systems.

Now what is being done today to help, is starting with recording the details of their migratory patterns, where they do as they develop, and seeing what areas they stop at and why. We’ve been able to figure out a big part of their diets and the fact that they always go back to the same beach. This also helps us figure out how many of them are out in the wild at the moment.

These guys here, Quinn was too hurt to go back out into the wild. Our new male we got for breeding purposes as I’m sure you’ve seen our two new baby girls. Our plan is to use our females, and be able to let a couple different nests hatch and release them to the wild. With this, we can help add in more to the population and with careful breeding we can keep everything very diverse. As you can see our new habitat is state of the art, everything in there is alive. The rocks and coral are all teaming with colonies which helps make this as real as it can get. On the inside, there is a special coating that makes it look like normal barriers that the turtles would see in the wild except for our little port hole here where they can look out at us. Quinn seems to really like looking out and watching us humans.”

She paused as everyone looked back over at Quinn, she was loving the attention as well. “If you guys would follow me, I’l show you the area that we have to farm and prepare all their food.” She started walking the small group towards their new ‘kitchen’ to show them the rest of what they do.
